Did you take a pregnancy test after missing your period? You now know that you are pregnant. In purely mathematical terms, you are in week 5 of pregnancy and the embryo is around three weeks old. A visit to your gynecologist at this early stage cannot yet provide any exciting results.
Nevertheless, your body and your baby are already undergoing many changes that you will want to follow closely. In this blog post, we summarize for you how your baby is developing in the 5th week of pregnancy and what is already happening in your body. We will also explain what you need to consider at this early stage and what preparations are already important.
How your baby develops in week 5 of pregnancy
Have you recently found out about your pregnancy and are wondering how far the embryo has already developed? In the 5th week of pregnancy, the cells of the fertilized egg continue to divide. Until now, this consisted of two cell layers, while the middle layer (middle germ layer) is now developing. The heart and circulatory system, for example, will form from this during the course of your pregnancy.
Your embryo consists of three layers in the 5th week of pregnancy. In the following weeks, all of your baby's organs will develop from these layers. The nervous system and respiratory tract, for example, will develop from the outer germ layer. In the 5th week of pregnancy, some organs and the neural tube are already forming.
Your baby receives all the nutrients it needs to develop via the placenta, which has already formed in the fourth week of pregnancy. Your diet is therefore crucial at this early stage of pregnancy.
This is how big your baby is in week 5
The embryo is already three weeks old in the 5th week of pregnancy. It is now around 2 millimeters in size. This is roughly the size of an orange stone. For this reason, the ultrasound is not particularly informative at this early stage of pregnancy: only a spot can be seen.
The embryo has an elongated shape and thus resembles a small tadpole. The embryo's small heart begins to beat around the 22nd day after fertilization.
The weight of the embryo is less than one gram in the 5th week of pregnancy and cannot yet be measured by your doctor. However, you can already start preparing for the birth of your baby.
What happens to your body in the 5th week of pregnancy
If your pregnancy has been confirmed by your doctor after several pregnancy tests, you may soon notice the first symptoms of pregnancy. The egg nests in the amniotic cavity, which can already lead to the first signs of pregnancy.
However, this doesn't have to be the case: many women only notice the first symptoms some time later. So don't worry if you don't feel pregnant yet. Every pregnancy is unique.
We summarize possible pregnancy symptoms that can occur in the 5th week of pregnancy:

You are overwhelmed with your emotions
At the beginning of a pregnancy, many women experience a variety of emotions. The joy that you will be holding your baby in your arms in nine months often predominates. But many expectant mothers also experience anxiety.

You feel a slight pulling sensation in your abdomen
In the 5th week of pregnancy, many women notice a pulling sensation in the abdomen and lower back. This is caused by your pregnancy hormones. They cause your muscles and ligaments to loosen. You should make an appointment with your gynecologist if the pain becomes very severe.

Your circulation is going crazy
You may experience increased dizziness in the first few weeks of pregnancy. Especially if you stand up too quickly. In this case, light sports exercises or alternating showers can help to stimulate your circulation.

Your sense of taste and smell change
It's not unusual for your pregnancy to affect your sense of taste and smell in the first few weeks. It's best to listen to what your body is telling you.

You experience your first cravings
Many women have strong cravings for certain foods during pregnancy. This may be due to an increased need for specific nutrients.

You are quickly out of breath
A baby is growing in your body - this involves a lot of effort. This means that you may get out of breath more quickly at the beginning and need to take more breaks.
As you can see, a lot is already happening in your body during the 5th week of pregnancy. It is therefore not unusual for you to notice the first signs of pregnancy. Some of them will probably become more pronounced over the next few months.
What you should look out for in the 5th week of pregnancy
After a positive pregnancy test, many expectant mothers ask themselves how they can support the baby's development. Even if you are only 5 weeks pregnant, there are already a few things you should bear in mind. After all, you are no longer only responsible for yourself, but also for your unborn baby.
In the 5th week of pregnancy, you should pay attention to the following aspects:

Consume enough folic acid
A folic acid deficiency during pregnancy can lead to neural tube defects, anaemia and other illnesses in your baby. Pregnant women are therefore recommended to eat enough foods containing folic acid. In consultation with your gynecologist, an additional intake of folic acid may also be advisable.

Drink enough
Make sure you drink enough fluids. Two to three liters per day are recommended. It is best to drink this in the form of water or unsweetened fruit teas.

Carry out light sports exercises
If you have problems with your circulation, you can boost it with light sports exercises. You can watch various videos for pregnant women online or attend a course for pregnant women in your area. This also has the advantage that you can meet other expectant mothers there.

Take care of yourself
It is recommended that you avoid heavy physical work right from the start of your pregnancy. Therefore, make sure you take it easy and take enough breaks. You should also not carry anything heavier than 5 kilograms.

Avoid alcohol and nicotine
To ensure that your baby can develop optimally, you should avoid alcohol and nicotine after a positive pregnancy test. These substances can impair development or even endanger your baby's life.
As you can see, there are some important points to consider at the beginning of a pregnancy. These should ensure that your baby can develop in the best possible way and that mother and child are well until the birth.
When you have your first appointment with your gynecologist, you should make a note of a few important questions before the consultation. For example, if you take medication regularly, you should bring this up. Not all medications are compatible with pregnancy and you may need to switch to an alternative. You should also mention any pre-existing conditions to be on the safe side.
As a rule, an appointment between the seventh and ninth week of pregnancy is a good idea. At this point, a lot can already be seen on the ultrasound. Among other things, your baby's heartbeat can also be examined.
If you have bleeding, pain or severe pregnancy symptoms, you should contact your doctor immediately and make an appointment.
